Agronomy resources

Guides to help you get the most from your plot and meet our quality and compliance standards.

  • Fermentation & drying

Ferment beans in wooden boxes for 5–6 days, turning them every 48 hours, then sun-dry to 7% moisture or below. Well-fermented, evenly dried beans qualify for Grade I pricing and the best flavour development.

  • Pest & disease management

Inspect pods weekly for capsid damage and black pod disease, removing and burning infected pods promptly. Combining resistant varieties with timely pruning cuts losses without over-relying on chemical treatment.

  • Shade-tree agroforestry

Interplanting cocoa with native shade trees and fruit trees protects soil moisture, supports biodiversity, and can help your plot qualify for a Rainforest Alliance premium. Aim for 30–40% canopy shade cover.

  • Post-harvest storage

Store dried beans in breathable jute bags on pallets, off the ground and away from walls, in a dry, well-ventilated space. Re-check moisture before delivery — beans above 8% moisture are downgraded and risk mould.

  • EUDR-ready record keeping

Keep your plot's GPS boundary and harvest dates up to date with your cooperative — this is exactly the data used in our EUDR due-diligence packs and batch traceability lookup. Accurate records mean fewer delays at export and stronger proof of deforestation-free sourcing.
